Tragedy of the Commons in the Production of Digital Artifacts

Abstract—Commons based peer production of digital artifacts such as open source software and online content creation platforms such as wikipedia are plagued by the tragedy of the commons scenario. Issues such as participation in equality, which is a small percentage of the population creates and the rest consume and others have led to this scenario. The aim of this paper is to examine and debate the various ethical dilemmas and issues leading to the tragedy of the commons in the realm of commons based peer production of digital artifacts.
